Paul Atherton

Bedfordshire based Paul “Avey” Atherton (a nickname that’s stayed with him since school) joined the radical paddock in 2022 and is quickly finding his pace.

Paul is an energetic individual who will no doubt be putting a lot of drivers under pressure this coming season.

Like most of us, Paul would much rather be behind a wheel of a racecar than playing golf, and he’s become a great addition to the team.

Paul’s main focus for the weekend is to have fun! Cheers to that!

  • If you could race any car what would it be?
F4 or F3 to see what it's like
  • Why?
I'd like to try some of the stuff out there to experience it. I was a track day enthusiast, and Radicals were my first.
  • If you could race any track, what would it be?
Silverstone, but I've done that so now the milk round of the European circuits
  • If you could meet any racing driver, alive or dead who would it be?
James Hunt but also Lewis Hamilton.
  • Why?
JH: He'd be a fun guy
LH: I think he gets a lot of negative press, but he's done so well and when he's done so well consistently for so long it would be incredible.
  • Not exclusively to cars or track - what is your earliest racing memory
Watching James Hunt and Nikki Lauda in the 1970s. I just remember being old enough to appreciate what I was witnessing but also maybe being young enough to be overwhelmed by it. I mean f1 in the mid-late 70's and buying the dinky toys, it was just incredible.
  • What is your racing goal
Continue to enjoy it, and continue to feel like I'm improving.
  • What was the first car/kart you raced?
    Radical SR1.
  • Why did you choose your current race series?
It represents enormous value for money relative to motor racing. The performance you get from a radical, particularly a SR1, relative to the investment you make. It simply provides excellent value for money.
  • What's the first thing you do when you get to the track.
I just get myself organised. I try to get everything laid out, and then I can relax.
  • Do you have a pre-race/quali ritual? If so, what is it?
I'm not a believer in fate or karma, but I dare anyone not to feel butterflies or a little nervousness before the race, no matter what they do.
  • Whose your biggest supporter?
All the people that make the experience possible. That is family and friends, the people I work with who enable me to do that, and the whole team here, I can't single any one person out. You get emotional support from some people and technical support from others.
  • Any advice for someone looking to get into racing [current race series]
Just take the leap, seriously, and you will not regret it. I think the SR1 is an awesome piece of kit, and while it is a racing car, and it truly is a racing car, if you put a track day enthusiast in a radical and give them a hot lap, they'll come away with a different level of experience than they would have had otherwise. I would say just take the leap because I truly believe that if you give yourself a bit of time, it will unlock a whole new experience around what's available. Just have some self-belief and just go for it.
  • Why did you choose to race with DW Racing
I love Darren, I think he's awesome. I think in something like this, you have to trust the people you work with, and while DW Racing is a commercial operation, which is absolutely necessary, I think the guys are truly emotionally invested in what we're doing, and I think it's a great team with a great atmosphere and complete commitment, and you get the same level of investment in terms of looking after you no matter where you are on the grid. It's just a really great atmosphere, it's like hanging out with your mates and racing cars and I will support them.
