John Davis

John “The Taller” Davis is a warm presence around the paddock and he embodies the DW Racing ethos of personal goal-setting and determination. Like his racing idol, Nigel Mansell, once his visor goes down, John finds a focus that sees him smash his objectives with regularity.

Sporting one of the best liveries on the track, John can be found behind the wheel of a well-designed black and gold SR3-RSX.

When he’s not at the track or watching motorsport, John is running with his local club or working hard at his company, JPR Greenaire.

John’s affinity for racing cars stems back to his school days at Heronswood School (1976-81), which ran six karts with around four pupils working on each. They would rotate roles so everyone had a chance to drive, engineer or mechanic.

  • If you could race any car, what would it be?
    LMP2 or LMP3
  • Why?
They're cool, and I like the longer endurance racing.
  • If you could race any track, what would it be?
    Spa would be the one!
  • If you could meet any racing driver, alive or dead who would it be?
    Nigel Mansell
  • Why?
The guy has been ultra-successful. His name is one everyone in my generation would respect. He's a pure thoroughbred racer. Off-track, you would think he's quite a mild guy, but once he's behind the wheel, the red mist comes down.
  • What is your earliest racing memory
Karting at school We used to build and race karts against other schools. That was probably the best experience. There would be a group of us and we would take turns driving, but as there was only one kart and other jobs to be done, we would compete among ourselves for the right to drive.
  • What is your racing goal?
Progression (actually, he said "not to be last" but we agreed progression was more positive!)
  • Why did you choose your current race series?
I wanted to find something that floated my boat from the karts. I looked at Caterhams and other road cars that had been converted, but watching a YouTube video about track cars and the costs associated with getting to a certain speed, Radical came to my attention and swept everything else away.
  • What's the first thing you do when you get to the track?
A strong cup of coffee and a sweet biscuit to settle the nerves.
  • Do you have a pre-race ritual? If so, what is it?
No! As long as I'm in the car, on time, with the visor clear. I don’t want to be late to the collection area.
  • Whose your biggest supporter?
    My wife
  • Any advice for someone looking to get into racing?
When on the track, just make sure you're going to be safe. Don't do anything stupid and, if you going to take a risk, make sure it's an educated risk. It's also very addictive!
  • Why did you choose to race with DW Racing?
Darren (Winter) and I got on like a house on fire. I had a chat with a couple of people and they said it's a no-brainer. Darren is a great guy and you need to do it. I jumped from Radical because I don’t think I could have been run like I'd want to be run. We're a family team here and that's what I like.
